How to Buy Cheap Shinkansen Tickets in 2026

What Is the Cheapest Way to Buy Shinkansen Tickets?

The cheapest way is to book online, early, for a fixed train. On the Tokaido Shinkansen (Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka), the early-booking fares on smartEX cut 10 to 20% off the standard price, and the Platt Kodama package cuts more if you take the slow train.

How much you can save depends on the line.

• Tokyo to Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka (Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen). Several discounts are on sale, all bookable in English.
• Tokyo to the north and the Japan Sea coast (Tohoku, Hokuriku, Joetsu lines). Since October 2026 there are almost no regular discounts.
• Several long trips in one week. A rail pass may beat any single ticket.

Cheap Shinkansen Tickets Compared

The table shows one-way adult prices for Tokyo to Kyoto, regular season, checked on the official sites in October 2026. Children aged 6 to 11 pay about half.

For Tokyo to Shin-Osaka, the same four tickets cost ¥14,520, ¥12,980, ¥12,000 and from ¥11,360. None of the discount fares are sold for Golden Week, Obon or the New Year holidays.

EX Hayatoku 21 for the Biggest Saving on the Nozomi

EX Hayatoku 21 is the cheapest way to ride the fast Nozomi. Book on smartEX at least 21 days ahead and Tokyo to Kyoto costs ¥12,430 instead of ¥13,970.

These are one-way prices from 13 March 2026 for adults and children (6 to 11).

These rules apply.

• It is on sale from 10:00 one month before until 23:30, 21 days before travel.
• It covers Ordinary Car reserved seats on a direct Nozomi, and since March 2026 also the Mizuho, Sakura and Tsubame on the lines west of Osaka.
• Each train has a limited number of these seats, so popular departures sell out.
• No changes. To switch trains you cancel (with a fee) and book again at whatever price is left.

smartEX takes overseas credit cards, and you board with a QR code or an IC card, so there is no paper ticket to collect. For journeys west of Osaka, EX Hayatoku 7 (book 7 days ahead) is also worth checking, at ¥16,380 from Tokyo to Hiroshima.

EX Family Hayatoku 7 for Families

If two or more of you travel together and you can take the Hikari or Kodama instead of the Nozomi, EX Family Hayatoku 7 is usually the cheapest smartEX fare, at ¥11,450 per adult and ¥5,720 per child from Tokyo to Kyoto.

For two adults and two children aged 6 to 11, Tokyo to Kyoto costs ¥34,340 one way, against ¥41,900 at the standard Nozomi fare, a saving of ¥7,560. The Hikari takes only a little longer than the Nozomi to Kyoto.

The Kodama stops everywhere and takes much longer.

Book from 10:00 one month before to 23:30, 7 days before, for two or more people in one booking. The same exclusion periods apply.

EX Hayatoku 1 for Cheaper Unreserved Seats on Short Trips

EX Hayatoku 1 is a small but useful saving for short hops from Tokyo, such as the day trips to Hakone or the Mt. Fuji area. It gives an unreserved seat on the Hikari or Kodama, booked by 23:30 the day before.

Tokyo to Odawara, the station for Hakone, costs ¥2,960 (child ¥1,480), against ¥3,280 for a standard unreserved seat. Tokyo to Mishima costs ¥3,730. It goes on sale six days before travel.

Because the seat is unreserved, a family may not sit together on a busy train, so on a weekend morning it is worth paying for reserved seats.

Platt Kodama for the Cheapest Ride from Tokyo to Osaka

Platt Kodama is a one-way package from JR Tokai Tours for the all-stations Kodama, and it is the lowest fare for Tokyo to Osaka if you have the time. It costs from ¥10,960 for an adult to Kyoto (child ¥5,860), ¥11,360 to Shin-Osaka and ¥9,000 to Nagoya.

Check these points before you book.

• Prices change by day. The lowest rate is Monday to Thursday. On weekends Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥11,470, and in busy periods ¥12,660, so at those times EX Family Hayatoku 7 on the faster Hikari can cost the same or less.
• Book from 10:00 one month before until 23:30 the day before. It is sold by JR Tokai Tours, not at the station ticket offices.
• From April 2026, each ticket comes with a choice of one drink voucher or a local coupon, chosen on the day.
• You get a fixed train and a reserved seat, with a Green Car option for a supplement.
• It is not sold for Golden Week, Obon (6 to 16 August 2026) or New Year (26 December 2026 to 4 January 2027).
• The Kodama takes about four hours to Shin-Osaka, compared with about 2 hours 30 minutes on the Nozomi.

With young children, four hours is a long time in a seat, so we only suggest it for families who have time to spare and children who will sleep or read.

I have not used these discount tickets with guests myself. They can be cheaper, but only when your plans fit their conditions.

What Happened to Tokudane on the JR East Shinkansen?

For the lines that JR East runs, to Sendai, Aomori, Niigata, Nagano and Kanazawa, there is now almost no regular discount. The online-only Tokudane 1 and Tokudane 14 fares on Eki-net were withdrawn after the last trains on 30 September 2026.

What is left is the occasional Tokudane Special 28, which gives 50% off for booking at least 28 days ahead, on set dates, trains and routes only. These sales are announced on Eki-net, often only on the Japanese pages, so check there when you plan the trip. Do not count on one.

Older guides that promise 10 to 30% off on the Tohoku or Hokuriku Shinkansen are out of date. For trips to the north, a regional pass is now the main way to save.

When a Rail Pass Is Cheaper Than Tickets

A rail pass is cheaper only if you make several long Shinkansen journeys in a short time. The 7-day Japan Rail Pass costs ¥50,000 for an adult, while a Tokyo to Kyoto return on EX Hayatoku 21 costs ¥24,860.

Even Tokyo to Kyoto, on to Hiroshima and back to Tokyo comes to about ¥45,000 at standard Nozomi fares, still less than the pass.

Cheaper Seats Without a Discount Ticket

Even without a special fare, a few choices bring the price down.

1. Book online, not at the counter. SmartEX's standard fare for Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥13,970. Buying a reserved seat at the station costs a little more.
2. Travel off-peak. In JR's off-peak periods, reserved fares drop by ¥200 per adult. In the peak seasons they rise.
3. Take an unreserved seat. On smartEX, an unreserved Tokyo to Kyoto ticket costs ¥13,320. On the Nozomi, the unreserved cars disappear during the holiday peaks.
4. Use the child rules. Ages 6 to 11 pay half. Under-6s ride free on a lap, two per paying passenger. A child under 6 in their own reserved seat pays the child fare.

Klook and Other Booking Sites

Sites such as Klook sell the same Shinkansen tickets in English, with a familiar checkout, but they are not cheaper than the official discounts above. Prices are in your own currency, which can include an exchange-rate margin, and the early-booking discounts in this guide are booked through smartEX and JR Tokai Tours.

Is there a 50% off Shinkansen ticket?
