JR Tohoku Shinkansen Overview

JR Tohoku Shinkansen Overview

The Tohoku Shinkansen runs from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori, making it Japan’s longest bullet train route at about 675 km.

It connects the capital with the Tōhoku region, passing through Sendai, Morioka, and Fukushima—each with distinct culture and scenery.

In this section you’ll discover the route and station layout, the rolling stock in service, and recent upgrades such as the upcoming E10 series.

Route & Stations: Tokyo to Shin-Aomori

Tohoku Shinkansen Map

The line begins at Tokyo Station, runs through Ueno, Ōmiya, Sendai, Morioka, and ends at Shin-Aomori.

It connects with the Hokkaido Shinkansen at Shin-Aomori and with the Yamagata and Akita Mini Shinkansen via Tsubasa and Komachi trains.

This makes it a versatile line for both high-speed and regional exploration.

Key stations:

  • Sendai
Tōhoku’s largest city, famous for Tanabata Festival and beef tongue.
  • Morioka
gateway to northern Honshu with hot springs and local noodle culture.
  • Fukushima/Koriyama
historic sites and hot spring access.
  • Shin-Aomori

Rolling Stock: E5, H5, E6, E8, and the Future E10

Current trains include E5/H5 (Hayabusa), E6 (Komachi, coupling with E5), and E8 (newest Mini Shinkansen for Yamagata).

They reach up to 320 km/h on the fastest sections between Utsunomiya and Morioka.

In March 2025, JR East announced the E10 series, designed to replace aging E2/E5 sets.

Testing is expected around 2027, with full service around fiscal 2030.

The E10 will retain 320 km/h speed but add stronger earthquake safety and modern amenities.

Onboard Comfort & Gran Class

Travelers can choose between Standard, Green Car, and Gran Class.

Gran Class offers wider seats, luxury interiors, and dedicated service with seasonal menus.

However, Gran Class is not available on every Tohoku train.

It is provided mainly on E5/H5 Hayabusa and some Hayate services, and some trains have a reduced Gran Class option.

Always check train details when booking.

Service Types: Hayabusa, Komachi, Yamabiko, Nasuno
  • Hayabusa
fastest service between Tokyo and Shin-Aomori, limited stops, reaching about 2h58m at best.
  • Komachi
couples with Hayabusa between Tokyo and Morioka, then splits to run on the Akita Shinkansen. Great for access to Akita Prefecture.
  • Yamabiko
semi-fast service, stopping at more cities than Hayabusa, suitable for Sendai and Morioka trips.
  • Nasuno
all-stops in southern sections (Tokyo–Utsunomiya area), often used by commuters or short-distance travelers.

Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass), Regional Passes & Future E10

The Japan Rail Pass covers all Tohoku Shinkansen services, including Komachi and Yamabiko.

Green Car and Gran Class require an additional fee.

Regional options like the JR East Pass (Tohoku area) provide unlimited rides in specified areas, making them cost-effective for multi-city itineraries.

The E10 series rollout from late 2020s will gradually enhance safety and comfort while keeping journey times competitive.

Seat Reservations, Oversized Baggage & Online Booking

Reservations are recommended, especially for Hayabusa and Gran Class.

Non-reserved seating is available only on some Yamabiko and Nasuno services.

For oversized baggage (over 160 cm total dimensions), JR East may require special booking or designated storage, similar to Tokaido/Sanyo rules.

Travelers should confirm baggage policy at time of booking.

Reservations can be made via the JR-East Train Reservation system in English.

Timetable checks and service updates are also available online.
